How a Kenyan pastry chef grew his dream small business deli by 250%

Small Business Success - Cafe Deli staff members celebrate opening of third branch

As a successful small business entrepreneur in Africa, Obado Obadoh realised his vision of opening a pastry shop when he established the now popular Café Deli in Kenya.

Obado’s Story

Obado, who is a trained pastry chef with in-depth experience in the hospitality industry of Kenya, approached GroFin in 2011 when an opportunity to buy-out an existing restaurant arose. Apart from finance, GroFin supported him in fulfilling his dreams through pre-business support, which included assistance in finalising various formal agreements with the restaurant’s owners.

Under his management and following a successful re-branding of the business, the new restaurant saw its revenues increase from US$ 97k, since its take-over, to over US$ 1million today.

How Café Deli Grew

With his keen business acumen and assistance from GroFin’s committed financial and business support team, Obado has witnessed his business grow from its humble beginnings of a 20 employee restaurant in 2010, to a well-established and successful 102 employee restaurant chain with three outlets in the central business district of Nairobi.

“GroFin was willing to bank on my idea when no one was willing to listen” (Obadoh, 2015)

Where Café Deli is now

As on date, the success of Mr Obadoh’s business can be appreciated through his many satisfied customers, and its popularity on hospitality ranking sites such as Trip Advisor, where an established reputation for quality and service is being recognised.

Today, this small and growing business (SGB) is positioned for even greater success through its transformation into a franchise business with the support of PUM and GroFin.

In 2015, Café Deli expressed the need to embrace a franchise model in line with their ambitious growth plans. GroFin not only listened, but acted alongside Mr Obadoh to help bring his plans to fruition. To achieve this, GroFin invoked its partnership with PUM, a volunteer-based organisation composed of Netherlands senior experts who provide business advice and technical assistance to organisations in developing countries and emerging markets.
